AWS Specifications and Classifications
For those new to the field of brazing or its specific applications, the names of braze alloys can be challenging to understand. This is because the various companies selling braze alloy have unique product names, but many characteristics of the materials may, in fact, be similar. How do you understand and compare products? The American Welding Society (AWS) provides a system; we’ll explain how it works.

Calculating Ring Volume
To produce a proper braze joint, the volume of alloy used must match or exceed the volume of the joint to be brazed. The use of excess alloy adds cost and may require an additional post-machining operation. To ensure consistency in brazing, Lucas-Milhaupt has developed rings of pre-measured braze alloys for each specific application. These products ensure proper ring volume for the tube-and-fitting application, but first, the volume of the joint clearance must be properly calculated. Let’s walk through the process.

Alloy Consumption Savings with Handy One
Alloy Consumption Savings When operators manually braze components with a torch, solid wire, and a separate brazing flux, there is a variance in the amount of brazing alloy among joints. This can result in excess alloy being consumed. Excess alloy means wasted materials, inconsistent brazing, and higher costs. Read on for a better alternative!

Capillary Action in Brazing
Lucas-Milhaupt has 70 years of experience providing products and services for the brazing industry. When working with manufacturing clients, we often emphasize the importance of capillary action in the brazing process. This action draws molten alloy into the joint between two metal parts. But what exactly IS capillary action? How does it work? And what factors inhibit its action? Today, we will focus on the scientific phenomenon of capillary action.

Handy One® Improves Joint Quality and Reduces Flux Usage
Brazing with Handy One® Brazing is commonly used in HVAC/R, automotive, aerospace, and other industries to join assemblies and different base metals. Brazing flux is applied to assemblies to prevent oxidation and allow the braze alloy to form the joint. When flux is applied externally before heating, a two-step, manual process is used. This introduces variable factors into the brazing process. Lucas-Milhaupt Handy One® flux-cored alloys offer a one-step alternative for brazing assemblies. These products can improve the quality of braze joints and reduce flux usage while streamlining the manufacturing process. Do you want better quality parts and reduced production costs? Read on for details!

Choosing Flux for Silver Brazing
Silver brazing may be used in the manufacture of HVAC/R condensers and evaporators, construction and mining equipment, electrical assemblies, aerospace and transportation components, art and jewelry, plus other applications. During this process, a chemical compound called flux is applied to joint surfaces just before brazing. For silver brazing, several flux types are available for various base metals and brazing conditions. How do you choose the correct flux? It depends on the base metal, filler metal, and brazing process/heating method. Read on for details!

Brazing vs. Welding
There are a number of options for joining metal parts, including adhesive bonding, nuts and bolts, and other mechanical fasteners. But for strong and permanent metal joints, the choice usually comes down to welding or brazing. What’s the difference? When should you use brazing vs. welding?

HVAC Joining Aluminum to Copper
As the HVAC industry uses more aluminum components, manufacturers need to join these parts—such as evaporator and condenser coils—to secondary copper lines or assemblies. In brazing or soldering, joint design and brazing/soldering consumables become key elements for joint integrity. Let’s head to the lab, as Lucas-Milhaupt tests the effect that different joint designs and brazing/soldering materials have on the quality of joints. Results will help you determine suitable means for joining your copper-to-aluminum components.
